Dear School Law Section Members:
Welcome to the School Law Section webpage. I am honored to serve as this year’s Chair of the School Law Section. For those of you who are not already familiar with the Section, the collegiality and mutual respect between members of the Section is unmatched by any other practice area in the State Bar. We invite you to join the School Law Section.
Like many members of the Section, I did not intend to be a school lawyer. However, I was fortunate enough to be mentored by a long-time school lawyer and proud member of the Section, Don Dean, who introduced me to this practice area. Don truly believed that a good lawyer not only served his clients, but also educated, trained and cultivated new lawyers. This belief is shared by the entire School Law Section. While we routinely challenge each other throughout the year, we remain dedicated to conducting superior legal education and providing networking opportunities for those who practice in this area. The School Law Section is also unique in that both seasoned and young lawyers share leadership roles and work together to promote the values and the mission of the Section. Truly, it’s the lawyers who make the Section special.
The Section provides the annual Section Retreat and helps plan the University of Texas School Law Conference. If you are new to the Section, I encourage you to attend both of these events. For those members who have not attended these events in a while, please plan to do so this year. Programming for the 2017 UT School Law Conference is almost complete, and planning is well underway for the 2017 Section Retreat. Both will be informative. The UT School Law Conference will be held February 23 and 24, 2017 at the AT&T Conference Center in Austin, and the 2017 Section Retreat will return to the Hyatt Hill Country Resort on July 27 - 30, 2017. Also, please be on the lookout for this year’s School Law Section Newsletter. If you have ideas for future articles or information to present to the Section, please contact either of the co-editors, Leticia McGowan or Giana Ortiz.
Thank you again for the opportunity to serve as Section Chair for this year. We are dedicated to continuing the professionalism and congeniality that has become a defining characteristic of the Section. So, if you are a new attendee to one of these events, please introduce yourself. We want to get to know you. Likewise, if you are interested in taking a more active role in the Section, contact me. Our commitment to professional and personal relationships, and to mentor each other will ensure the continued success of the Section.
